10 Sapphic Love Stories We’re Obsessed With

Is there anything more uplifting than a sapphic love story? Lesbian, bi and queer relationships between women have historically been hidden in order for those involved in them to stay safe.

After all, it wasn’t that long ago when any sort of romantic or sexual relationship between women was seen as a bad thing. (Remember when Lindsay Lohan started dating Samantha Ronson and everyone said it was because she was ‘wild’?)

Luckily, Hollywood and many aspects of the media have been more inclusive, highlighting same-sex relationships between women, and we’ve been able to finally see sapphic love stories stepping into the stoplight.

Below are just a handful of some of our favorite bi and lesbian celebrity couples that we’re excited to uplift.

Abbi Jacobson and Jodi Balfour

We love a sapphic engagement story! Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and South African actress Jodi Balfour announced they were engaged at the League of Their Own Premiere. The relationship became public not too long after Balfour came out on her Instagram account, sharing that it was how “undeniably freeing it has been to finally embrace [her] queerness.”

Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts

We’d be remiss not to talk about Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts. The two became the first queer couple to grace the cover of Essence.

“The least of my attraction is gender,” Nash told Essence. “What I was and am still attracted to is Jessica’s soul. She was the most beautiful soul I had ever met in my life. Now that I’ve experienced it, I can’t imagine going through life without it.”

Raven Symoné and Miranda Maday

The iconic Disney show channel star Raven Symoné is happily married to (and YouTube famous with) fellow actress Miranda Maday. According to a 2016 “It Got Better” video, Symoné held off on coming out publicly because she didn’t think her public life mattered when it came to the public sphere… but all of that changed when she fell in love with Maday and wanted to share her relationship with the world.

Ariana DeBose and Sue Makko

Only a few days after she became the first openly queer actor of color to win an Academy Award for acting, West Side Story actress Ariana DeBose celebrated her relationship with costume designer Sue Makko on social media. They two share a love for theater (that’s how they met!) and continue to wow us with their adoration and affection toward one another.

King Princess and Quinn Wilson

You aren’t the only one sliding into your crushes’ DMs … Allegedly, that’s how King Princess and Quinn Wilson started dating when the musician (AKA, Mikaela Straus) impulsively messaged the Minneapolis-born director, whose response was Hi, Miss King (awww, talk about a suave lesbian chat – yes, online dating is more alive than ever 😍).

The two first made their red carpet debut as a couple in 2019 and started collaborating with another artistically in 2020. They’re reportedly still going strong—Straus even dedicated a song to Wilson in her recent NPR Tiny Desk concert, calling her, “music angel.”

Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer

Kristen Stewart has historically been a celebrity who keeps her private life, well, private. (Stewart doesn’t have social media.) But when it comes to her relationship with screenwriter Dylan Meyer, the Twilight alum is happy to show off her love. Two have attended many red carpet events together, and Stewart often describes her partner as brilliant and having a “superbrain.

Wanda and Alex Sykes

Married in 2008, Wanda and Alex Sykes have built quite the adorable life together. Not much is known about Alex, aside from the fact that she’s French, loves to travel, and used to work as an interior designer. The two also one of the most meet-cutes we’ve ever heard of: they met on a ferry to Fire Island and then bonded over kitchen countertops. (We’re obsessed.)

Madison Bailey and Mariah Linney

Outer Banks actress Madison Bailey first announced her queerness when she came out on her TikTok, sharing “”Nobody knows what pansexual means. Girls, boys, trans boys, trans girls, nonbinary babies. It’s what’s on the inside, boo.” The next video announced her relationship with UNC-Charlotte Basketball player Mariah Linney… and it’s been a digital love story ever since.

Beanie Feldstein and Bonnie-Chance Roberts

We love cute proposals… especially cute proposals during Pride month, which is exactly when actress Beanie Feldstein and producer Bonnie-Chance Roberts became engaged. Two apparently met on the set of How to Build a Girl in 2018, and have been inseparable ever since.

Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle

An iconic sapphic love story, soccer player Abby Wambach and best-selling author Glennon Doyle met when Wambach was on a book tour. In her book Untamed, Doyle remembers meeting Wambach, saying “there she is.” The two now live in California and host a podcast together where they cover a myriad of different topics, including guilt, addiction, regret, and, of course, love.
