23-Year-Old Woman Created Gender and Race Neutral Playing Cards

Regardless if you’ve played cards recently, you probably remember how the cards look. They’re red or black/blue on the back, and on the front you have the four colors, numbers from 1 (A) to 10. Then, it’s the Jack, the Queen, the King, and the Joker.

Indy Mellinik is a 23-year-old woman from the Netherlands that thought something was strange about the traditional cards. She realized that the cards were sexist and not race-friendly, so she decided to create a new deck of cards that would be fully inclusive. Namely, she completely removed ‘gender hierarchy and race differences’ from the cards.
She was helped by her supportive dad and founded ‘GSB Playing Cards’. In her cards, Kings, Queens, and Jacks are replaced by Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

She told Bored Panda that she was raised by her mom to always consider her choices and look for alternatives outside of the box. She doesn’t want to polarize people and take away something, so that’s why she created the inclusive playing cards.

The first step towards creating the new cards was thinking up a brand new hierarchy that didn’t involve Kings, Queens, and Jacks. She also noticed that all of the cards are white royalty, which is also an inequality. So, she decided to step away from people in general, and came up with Gold, Silver, Bronze.
She designed the new cards, and her friends and family loved them so much that they all wanted a pair. She first created about 50 sets just to sell them to her close friends, but the idea started spreading, so she ordered a batch of 500. The rest started snowballing from there.

Although her project received some negative comments, she says that she has understanding and empathy for everyone. However, she believes that the new icons are a much better alternative and are more inclusive towards everyone.

The orders have since exceeded every expectation, and Indy can barely keep up with the demand.
