Every pet owner is constantly running away from one thought: saying the last goodbye to your best pal and trusted companion. However, even though we sometimes act like we can put it away, it’s inevitable.
When pet lover Jessi Dietrich from Illinois asked her vet what the hardest part of his job was, his answer instantly broke her. She tweeted the unexpected answer and it went viral on the social media, with more than 140,000 likes and 42,000 retweets.
“I just have one pet of my own. His name is Rick, he’s a black and white cat and is about 2 and a half years old. Though he only weighs about 5 pounds, he has the biggest personality to make up for what he may lack in size.” – says Jessi.
She adds that she took him to the vet because he nearly lost his life from a UTI blockage a year ago, and her vet had to perform an emergency surgery. Luckily, the surgery was successful, but her dog gets at least one or two infections per month now.
The near-death experience of Rick made Jessi very aware that one day she will have to say goodbye to her pal, and she realized that even though some pets may only be in our lives for a short period of time, we are in their lives for a large percentage of theirs.
“They are with us during our highs and lows, always excited to see us when we’ve gotten home. Please consider this when the time comes for you to put an animal down.”
Check out why so many pet owners are taking this whole thing the wrong way, and don’t be shy even you let a tear or two down your face.
Jessi adds that the intention of her tweet was not to guilt people into staying or making them feel bad for not staying with previous pets, but she just wanted to share these experiences to raise awareness to them.
Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital also shared a post written by a vet, and he encourages people not to abandon their pets when they need them the most.
People felt absolutely heartbroken.
