A New List Of The Word’s Most Dangerous Countries For Women Has Emerged And It Might Surprise You

The new list of the most dangerous countries for women includes a few places that might surprise you.

A survey of 550 global experts on women’s issues was conducted between March 26 and May 4 this year, and the Thomson Reuters Foundation published its results this week. Countries that have high rates of violence against women were taken into account by the experts, as well as countries which lack economic resources, which have health care issues and traditions that perpetuate strict gender roles.

The country that topped the list as the most dangerous one for women right now is India. It has seen an uptick in s*xual violence against women in the past decade, including the case when an 8-year-old girl was brutally murdered after being s*xually assaulted by 8 men in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state in April this year.

According to Reuters, the country earned the top spot for three reasons: “the risks women face from s*xual violence and harassment, from cultural and traditional practices, and from human trafficking including forced labor, s*x slavery and domestic servitude.”

The only Western country that “earned” a place in the top 10 most dangerous places for women was the United States at place No. 10. Reuters thinks that the U.S. has a place on this list because of “the rampant s*xual violence American women face and the lack of access to justice in r*pe cases”

The survey took place after the #MeToo movement went viral in the U.S.

The second, third, fourth and fifth place on the list belong to Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Saudi Arabia, respectively. However, Reuters notes that some of the countries on the list, such as Syria, Afghanistan, Nigeria (No. 9) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (No. 7) are recovering from civil wars and it puts women at higher risks.

In the ranking of the most dangerous place for women in terms of s*xual violence, the U.S. and Syria share the third place. Someone is s*xually assaulted in the U.S. every 98 seconds, and 90 percent of the victims are female!

The U.S. reported in 2012 that r*pe was being used as a weapon of war in Syria, as thousands of Yazidi and Syrian women have been taken by ISIS as s*x slaves.
