Black Activist Athlete Turns Her Back On American Flag During The Anthem

Gwen Berry is a black activist athlete that turned her back on the American flag as the national anthem was played at the US Olympic track and field trials a few days ago.
Besides being an outspoken athlete, Berry is known for her activism and she said she believes it was a set-up. Namely, even though the national anthem is being played once every evening at the trials, on that day it was played just as Berry stood on the podium after she received her bronze medal in the hammer throw.
So, as the anthem was playing, she turned and faced away from the flag in the opposite direction of the other two athletes. When the anthem finished, she held a black t-shirt over her head which read ‘Activist Athlete’. She draped the t-shirt over her head and said that ‘they did it on purpose’.

Berry has been very vocal about the issues of her community and said that she doesn’t want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important, as the anthem doesn’t speak for her nor has ever.
She added that her purpose and mission is bigger than sports, as she’s there to represent those who lost their lives due to systematic racism.

“What I need to do is speak for my community, represent my community, and help my community. Because that’s more important than sports,” – she told The Huffington Post.
