The 30-year-old Victoria Parry drank a bottle of wine and then hit three other cars. According to Judge Sarah Buckingham, Perry, a boozer who has just got out of a bad relationship, would have gone “straight to jail” if she were a man.
The judge, however, have Perry three months to address her issues, even though she “deserved” a prison term, and the comments are now being investigated by a judicial watchdog.
According to prosecutor Tim Sapwell, Perry crushed into three cars and it caused her Fiat to spin off into a wooded area and catch fire.
She was pulled off from her car by an off-duty police officer, and even though she was banned from the road at the time, she told him that she had drunk a bottle of wine and “shouldn’t be driving”.
The judge said that if Miss Parry was a man, there is no question that she would have gone right into prison, because this is truly a shocking case of dangerous driving, against a background of two previous convictions for excess alcohol. They added that Perry, whether she admits it or not, is an alcoholic.
Judge Buckingham deferred sentencing for three months and told Parry that she “richly deserved” an immediate custodial term of 18 months. However, she wants to see whether Parry can really address the issues rather than paying lip service, and she ordered her to abstain from alcohol, pay for private counseling, and attend AA meetings. If she compiled, the custody would not be made immediate. However, if she doesn’t, the judge will conclude that Parry is not worthy of the chance.
