Ana Paula de Silva is a lawmaker from the southern state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, who caused outrage in the country when she wore a red outfit with cleavage when she was sworn-in on February 1. The 43-year-old de Silva had previously served two terms as a local mayor, and she received the fifth largest number of votes in last year’s state assembly election.
Many people were outraged, however, because she showed up wearing a red jumpsuit with deep cleavage for the swearing-in ceremony, and she has since clapped back at the critics by saying that women have breasts, and the society needs to get used to women being in politics.
During an interview with the Brazilian network NSC TV, De Silva decided to fire back at her critics by saying that she had thought people were going to talk about the red outfit, but she was surprised to see that they were only focused on the cleavage.
“Women have breasts and I have big breasts.” – she added.
She also added that she has always been like that, and it’s not now that she has become a representative that she will become another woman. She said that she is not there to be evaluated for that, and the way she dresses is her problem.
When she was asked if whether her outfit choice was a form of protest, she said that women ARE in politics, and society has to get used to seeing them as they are. There are much more important issues for the Legislative Assembly to discuss rather than her cleavage.
There were many vulgar and inappropriate comments on her Instagram post, and even some of her political opponents (including women) said that her choice of clothing was “shocking and inappropriate”.
