The city council of the small town in Texas, Waskom, unanimously voted to ban all endings of pregnancies within city limits, and declared itself a “sanctuary city of the unborn”.
The five-member city council said that it passed the ordinance to prevent clinics for such procedures from opening in the city, and there is currently no provider for ending pregnancies in Waskom.
The city’s mayor and attorney reportedly warned council members that the decision is unconstitutional.
Mayor Jesse Moore said that they will most likely end up getting sued if this passes, and it could even go to the Supreme Court.
The ordinance includes exceptions for incest and forcing upon, or if the mother’s life is in danger.
The city’s council is made up of five men, and they said that it included the exceptions so the ordinance could challenge the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which gave women the right to end their pregnancies.
The ordinance is modeled after the city of Roswell in New Mexico who declared themselves “sanctuary city for the unborn”.
