Period pain is generally under-researched, misunderstood, and we, as a society, don’t really understand or recognize it. But people have finally started to talk about it!
The conversation has raised all kinds of important issues and questions about the period pain, looking beyond the “sensational headlines” like the heart-attack comparison that came from a single doctor.
Everyone is wondering why the condition that affects almost 20% of all the women is so unknown, or why do doctors take the pain of women less seriously. Women have no options but to keep quiet, take a painkiller and go on with their lives. What would have happened if men had such issues?
There still appears to be a general discomfort in the media about the topic, and there isn’t a prominent lobby that pushes the need for further research.
We really need to start talking about period pain if we want to change things anytime soon, to normalize it and to start taking it more seriously.
