The first polyamorous family in California to parent together as a ‘throuple’ and put all three dads on the same birth certificate has opened up about their life.
Doctor Ian Jenkins, Alan Mayfield, and Jeremy Allen Hodges made history in 2017 when a judge allowed for all of them to be on the birth certificate of their daughter Piper, now 3. The decision paved the way for other polyamorous families to gain legal recognition in the US, and the throuple now also have a 14-month-old son named Parker.
Parker and Piper are half-siblings using an egg donor and a surrogate.
Ian and Alan have been together for seventeen years, and they’ve been with their partner Jeremy for eight years. The children call Jeremy ‘daddy’, while Alan is known as ‘dada’ and Ian is known as ‘papa’.
Ian described their unique family as ‘just three tame, regular people who spend a lot of time talking about what to have for dinner’.
The throuple has now released a book which was written by Ian, and it’s called Three Dads and a Baby. The book will be published in March 2021 by Cleis Press and Simon and Schuster, and it follows the story of their unique family. The dads also offer tips, including how to develop a consistent parenting style and what to do when your child prefers daddy over dada or papa. Additionally, they write about the positive sides, like three incomes in the same home, and three people doing the night feeds.
In an interview with HuffPost, Ian said that they did have a slight attention to the fact that their kids might be perceived differently.
Luckily, they’ve had ‘zero push back’ so far, both in their personal or professional lives.
Ian added that their oldest is now in preschool, and fellow parents and kids are interested in their story.
According to the family, a continuous conversation is the key to a healthy polyamorous relationship when it comes to parenting.
