The public has been left outrage after photos from Ukraine showed female Ukrainian soldiers practicing for a parade while wearing heels instead of the usual army boots. The parade was held in preparation for the official ceremony that’s about to take place on August 24 to mark 30 years of independence for the Eastern European country.
According to Irina Geraschenko, an opposition member of the Ukrainian parliament, the heels were a sign of sexism, and not equality. The defense ministry, however, hit back and said that the heels are a part of the regulation-dress uniform. Many people complained online that the women soldiers were being sexualized, and one commentor wrote that high heels is a mockery of women imposed by the beauty industry.
This is what another commenter wrote:
“31,000 female soldiers in Ukraine risking their lives defending their country just like their male counterparts … only to be made a mockery of and forced to march in heels.”
