Can you imagine being as young as 7 and sent to a special fattening farm and force-fed 16.000 calories a day in order to put on weight so you would be transformed into a “perfect wife?” It`s as brutal as it sounds and many Mauritanian girls share this fate. FYI, the recommended amount for an average 12-year-old girl is 1.500 calories a day.
In this country to be beautiful means having stretch marks (especially the arms) and having a curvy body.

Usually, when they first arrive, one woman is put in charge to make sure they consume as much as 16.000 calories a day, which is four times more than a male bodybuilder consumes daily. She constantly has to remind the girls that they are here to become beautiful and that it’s her job to make sure their bodies blow up like big balloons.
The process of force-feeding is called Leblouh and it has long been a tradition in Mauritania. Here thin women are seen as inferior to the fuller and curvier women.
