Graphic Designer ‘Fixes’ Girls’ Life Sexist Magazine Cover

A side-by-side photo that was posted on social media a few weeks ago went viral.
The photo was a side-by-side of Girls’ Life magazine cover next to the cover of Boys’ Life magazine, and it served as a reminder of the stereotyped messages that are marketing to girls.

Many people were frustrated by the photo, and a woman named Katherine Young decided to take matters into her own hands.

Young is a graphic designer, so she decided to show Girls’ Life what their cover should look like.

Katherine said that she was in shock when she saw the side-by-side photo, and she couldn’t even believe that it’s real. However, after Googling the current issues of the two magazines, she found the covers to be real.

So, she decided to put her graphic skills to work, and she swapped out the cover girl for Olivia Hallisey, the 2015 Google Science Fair Grand Prize winner. She even photoshopped some new, empowering headlines, and the final result was a magazine cover that offers girls much better alternatives than tips on “how to wake up pretty”.

Katherine hopes that her cover will inspire all of us to do better every day and be more conscious of the imagery our children see.
This is the cover she made:
