The 17-year-old Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has become a global sensation as she has been preaching across the whole planet about the need to fix it.
She has since inspired millions of people to pay more attention to the environment, and she sparked probably the largest rally in human history.
She has now turned to the world leaders to share her message at the UN Climate Change Summit, and her speech is what everyone has been talking about today.
The Climate Action Summit in New York City heard from many, but it was Thunberg’s speech that touched so many people across the world.
She started off by saying that it’s all wrong, and she shouldn’t be there. She should be back in school on the other side of the ocean, yet the adults have come to the young people for hope. She added that the governments have stolen her dreams and her childhood with their empty words, even though she is one of the lucky ones.
People are losing their lives, the entire ecosystem is collapsing, and we are at the beginning of mass extinction. However, all they can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth.
Thunberg said in her speech that the science has been crystal clear for more than 30 years, and they still continue to look away and come there saying that they’re doing enough. However, the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.
She urged the leaders of countries and big companies to do more than they’re currently doing in order to cut emissions, and there was a promise from 66 countries to do more to stop the advances of climate change. 30 countries committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, and Finland and Germany have pledged to ban coal within the next 10 years, which is an extremely ambitious goal.
