Iain Robertson is a man from Glasgow, Scotland, that wanted to shame the racial makeup of the contestants at Miss Scotland 2019, and he complained about the lack of diversity. He shared a photo of them and captioned it with:
“Delighted to see such a diverse lineup for Miss Scotland this year.”
Thousands of commenters showed up to the post, and most people criticized him for his interpretation of the photo.
Many people, though, were unhappy that Robertson started accusing without considering Scottish demographics. According to them, there’s no hate against race in the Miss Scotland 2019, and that’s not the reason for the lack of “diversity” in the photo.
Scotland’s Census 2011 said that 84% of Scotland’s population reported their ethnicity as “White: Scottish”, and a further 8% as “White: Other British”. To add to that, the majority of non-British groups also reported as White. The Asian population was the largest minority ethnic group (3% of the population), while the African, Caribbean, or Black groups made up just 1% of the population.
