How Can A Mask Protect From A Virus When A Fart Can Make It Through Jeans?

How Can A Mask Protect From A Virus When A Fart Can Make It Through Jeans?

Ever since the coronavirus pandemic hit the world, there has been an ongoing debate about the face masks and their use. Although it has been proven many times that face masks DO protect you from contracting the virus, some still believe that there’s no point in wearing any mask at all. There’s this group of people that believes that wearing any mask except the N95 mask is pointless, and some even believe that even an N95 mask is useless “because you can smell farts through a mask”. Yes, get this: their analogy is that if you can smell a fart through jeans, a mask can’t possibly stop the virus. Take this meme that has been circulating the internet in the last few weeks, for example:

Trevor A. Makal is an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia at Wise, and he recently decided to take it to Twitter and write a powerful thread in which he clears up why masks block viruses, even though they don’t necessarily block fart smells.

So, the molecule of the Covid-19 is from one hundred to one thousand times bigger than the fart molecule.
The reality is that most of us don’t understand how viruses work, and scientists have spent years and years studying virus behavior. Still, even they sometimes find the topic complicated and mysterious, but there’s one thing in common that every scientist suggests: it’s really, really important for all of us to wear a mask.
