Jameela Jamil’s Tweet About Why Airbrushing Should Be Banned Goes Viral
The popular British actress Jameela Jamil, best known for her role in “The Good Place”, has been praised and supported a lot recently for her outspoken views on Twitter. She is self-described “feminist in progress”, and she calls out various issues in the entertainment industry on her Twitter profile.
Jameela set out her views on the increasingly common use of photoshop, filters, editing apps, as well as airbrushing in a recent piece for the BBC, and she wrote that she feels those things “are legitimizing the patriarchy’s absurd aesthetic standards, that women should be attractive to the straight males at all costs”.
She wrote that she thinks it’s a disgusting tool that has been used mainly against women, and it is responsible for so many more problems in society. We don’t realize those problems, however, because we are completely blinded by the media, society, and culture. She gave a personal example for this, sharing the problem with eating disorders she had as a teenager because of the “perfect” images in the magazines.
She highlighted the fact that men in their 50’s are celebrated for the way they look naturally, and that people say “it gives them a rugged attractiveness”, while same-aged women are photoshopped and airbrushed to within an inch of their lives. Check out her series of tweets, and tell us what’s your opinion on this issue in the comments!
This is how people responded. There were some negative comments, but most people agreed with Jamil.
