Ladies, Rejoice! The Period Emoji Has Been Confirmed, But People Are Confused

Ladies, our time has come! We no more have to hint about it being “that time of the month”, because we are finally getting the period emoji!

Unicode Consortium, the organization that manages the emoji distribution, recently announced that a new set of emoji are on their way, and they include the blood drop emoji.

It will come to our keyboards in spring 2019, and it was willed into existence by girls’ rights group called Plan International UK in an effort to battle the silence and stigma around menstruation. More than 55,000 people backed up the campaign, and many women believe that the period emoji would facilitate conversations about periods with their partners and friends.

Lucy Russell, the head of Girls’ Rights & Youth at Plan International UK said that the emoji can express what 800 million women around the world are experiencing every month, and she thinks that it’s a huge step towards normalizing periods.

She added that we’ve obsessively silenced and euphemized periods for years, and it has a negative impact on girls. Many girls feel embarrassed to talk about their periods, and they can suffer health implications as a consequence.

Even though she acknowledged that a simple emoji will not solve the stigma around periods, she believes that it will help change the conversation and the shame around periods.
