A lifeguard has been shut down by a furious mother after he asked her to leave a public pool while she was breastfeeding her 10-month-old baby.
The woman has chosen to stay anonymous, and she wrote that she was nursing her baby at the edge of the pool while she was supervising her 3-year-old son.
She told Yahoo 7 News that the lifeguard, a young female, asked her to leave because they “didn’t want milk to get into the pool”, and because her 10-month-old son could vomit in the pool. She was also told that foods and drinks are not allowed in the pool, and getting milk in the water would be hygiene risk.
The mom further explained that it was the center’s policy to supervise her 3-year-old son while he was swimming in the pool, so her solution was to nurse her baby while supervising her son at the Lakeside Leisure Centre in Raymond Terrace, Sydney, Australia.
The lifeguard told her that there is no policy about breastfeeding, but they don’t allow food and drink in the pool.
The mother told her that she can’t stop the milk coming out when she has a letdown, and she was asked by the lifeguard to leave the pool because, apparently, breastfeeding is illegal. She also noted that it was the second time she was asked to leave the center while breastfeeding, and she described the lifeguard’s reasons as “pathetic” and “ignorant”.
The people’s opinions, however, were divided.
Lake Leisure Centre management has confirmed that they are investigating the complaint. What is your take on this one? Tell us in the comments!
