As we’ve seen it numerous times already, moms are subject to all kinds of double standards in today’s world. For example, if you work a full-time job, it means that you “don’t love your kids”. However, if you choose to be a stay-at-home-mom and raise your kids, they say that “you should be ashamed of yourself for not having any ambition”. One of the fields where double standards are at their peak, however, is breastfeeding. Many people fiercely argue that “moms should breastfeed their children and not feed them formula”, but as long as it doesn’t make them uncomfortable.
This is the reason a recent post on the Facebook group Breastfeeding Mama Talk attracted thousands of people.
Critics often claim that they are “pro-breastfeeding”, but they just think women should not do it in public, or they should do it “discreetly and respectfully”. Well, from what we can tell, that means breastfeeding under a poncho while apologizing to everyone the entire time. Oh, and what’s with “respectful breastfeeding”? How can something as natural as breastfeeding be disrespectful to anyone? Instead of the moms ‘respecting’ the feelings of strangers, why don’t the strangers just mind their own business?
Check out the post that gained a lot of attention on Breastfeeding Mama Talk:
The post attracted thousands of commenters, and most of them were angry at people who just can’t seem to get enough of shaming women for breastfeeding in public. To add to that, these people often refer to breastfeeding as “disgusting” and “rude” because women need to use their breasts in order to breastfeed. Well, the baby has just as much of a right to eat in public as everyone else!
