Living on a tight budget is tough anywhere in the world, and people who’ve been on a tight budget would tell you that the pay-day sometimes seems like its light-years away.
The big day finally arrives, though, and you see your paycheck, only to find out that its $9.
This is exactly what happened to Aaliyah Cortez, a young mom from Texas who had worked 70+ hours as a bartender. The woman was left in disbelief when she saw the paycheck, and shared that she cannot afford to live off $2.13 an hour, so she solely relies on the generosity of her customers.
The mom decided to create a TikTik to visualize the problem, and she shows in the TikTok that she received $150,81 in hourly wages for 70 hours of work, at a rate of $2.13 an hour. However, after medicare, taxes, and social security, the number was reduced to just $9.
Aaliyah also received around $700 in tips, but the reason her hourly rate is so low is that restaurants need to supplement tips if they do not fully cover the gap the tipped minimum wage and the regular minimum wage.
Aaliyah’s post gained a lot of popularity on the internet, and it sparked a heated discussion about how important it is to tip, and whether restaurants should “force” us to tip:
