Moms In Portland Form Human Shield To Protect Protestors

In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests, President Trump issued an executive order which allows federal officers to patrol cities. Portland is one of the cities that has seen unrest and violent government overreach, as the government forces used tear-gas, assaulted, and even took down protesters. As reported, protesters have been removed from the streets of Portland in unmarked vehicles, so moms had to take matters into their own hands and step in to help protect the protesters.

Protests began in the city just a few days after George Floyd’s case, and they have not stopped in the past 50 days. The demonstrations have been peaceful, but there have been several clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Trump has since vowed to “dominate” the city, which angered Portland’s moms.

The federal courthouse in Portland has been surrounded by a fence in order to keep protesters out, and protestors risk violence if they go anywhere near the fence. Teacher Lindsay Smith shared the horrifying videos on Twitter and wrote that touching the fences has resulted in tear gas, arrests, and more from police, both federal and local. In order to protect the protestors, moms from the city have formed an arm-in-arm line and chanted “Feds stay clear! Moms are here!” at the federal courthouse.

As reported by the New York Times and journalist Robert Evans, the situation in Portland is similar to a war, and he finds it hard to see how things go much further without people losing their lives.
Oregon senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, and Senator Chuck Schumer have requested a formal federal investigation into what is happening in Portland.
