Myths Debunked – This Is What Babies Ate In The Pre-Formula Days

The US is currently in the midst of a baby formula crisis. The country has a severe shortage of formula, and it’s all happening after major formula manufacturer Abbott pulled its products from the shelves across the country after reports claimed that four infants have fallen ill from bacterial infections, and two passed. Add the supply chain issues to that, and there’s a national formula crisis, with out-of-stock percentage of 43 percent.

With the current supply gap, many have suggested that moms should simply switch to breastfeeding, as they did in the past. But, as Carla Cevasco, Ph.D., pointed out, this may not be as a good idea as people believe. Her tweet has gained a lot of popularity, and we invite you to check it out below.

The historian opened up about what have people been doing throughout history, and how not every mom has breastfed her child. She also listed several reasons on why breastfeeding is not always the best option, including how sometimes the mom is not present, there are physical/mental health converns, or she simply needs to return to work outside the home.

All in all, she concluded that we shouldn’t ‘demonize’ formula just because of an imagined past in which everyone breastfed, because in the actual past, babies were starving or getting ill because they weren’t fed enough. And many of those babies would have survived today because they would have had access to safe, nutritionally complete formula.
