Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad recently told the New Yorker that many Muslim women want to wear modest attire, but their needs are not always met by the world of athletics, and the lack of swimwear options is a big problem. In fact, she added that many Muslim girls never even learn how to swim because of this problem.
In order to combat this problem, Nike has recently launched a new, modest swimwear line specifically made for Muslim women.
Many Muslim female athletes have found a lack of options, especially when it came to swimwear, so the Nike Victory Swim Collection comes “from listening to athletes from diverse communities”. According to the company, many Muslim female athletes felt that most of the options they’ve had until now leave them feeling weighted down or wondering if their hijabs would stay in place while swimming.
Sports Illustrated featured their first “burkini babe” on the cover of their swimsuit issue earlier this year, and the burkini is becoming more and more popular since then. The problem with regular burkini is that they’re not really designed for athletic competition, so Nike’s new option is designed to provide “full coverage without reducing the range of motion in the water”.
Many Twitter users were excited about Nike’s new line, and Zahra Lari, a figure skater from the UAE said that Nike’s Victory Swim Collection doesn’t weigh you down and it helped her swim better. The collection includes the Nike Victory Full-Coverage Swimsuit, plus separate options, including swimming hijab, a tunic, and leggings.
