People Are Taking Photos In Chernobyl As Part Of New Instagram Trend

Kylie Jenner’s Handmaid’s Tale party is nothing compared to the new tone-deaf way to celebrate a prestigious TV show.

Instagram “influencers” have flocked the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the town Pripyat in Ukraine, a place where thousands of people lost their lives after the nuclear reactor at the power plant exploded on April 26, 1986.

It’s said that over 93,000 of people lost their lives due to the accident, and the town has been uninhabitable for the 33 years since the tragedy.

The site was declared safe to visit in 2011, and the HBO miniseries has made Crazy Rich Russians head to the place and pay their respects (and get the likes on Instagram).

Yup. You read that right.

Pripyat saw an increase of 30% in tourist bookings since the HBO show premiered, and one of them was an Instagram model that decided to show off her skin that was not taken off in a fire. Weird flex, but ok.

This is what people in the comments wrote:

And she wasn’t the only one to take photos in the abandoned town.

Many “influencers” used the opportunity to take photos.
For example, bikini entrepreneur Julia Baessler took a photo in the room where it happened, the room in which Soviet staff failed to prevent the disaster.

(she has since deleted the Instagram photos)
