Instagram as one of the most popular social networks of today, has proven to be a really helpful tool for entrepreneurs and artist to spread a message or a cause and sometimes inspire people to change their habits in life.
On the other side of the spectrum, Instagram is also the network where stars advertise products unfitting for young kids, a place of regular cyberbullying and where people go to receive ego busts from friends and total strangers.
Instagram has been used to share body positivity acceptance, but it also can be a place of online bullies who use the anonymity to attack people’s appearances. Melissa Gibson, a blogger, is a woman who has had experience with these both sides of Instagram.
Melissa, born in Louisville, Kentucky, is a body positivity blogger who has over 200,000 followers on Instagram. On New Year’s Eve, she posted a photo of her and her partner kissing and she was immediately slammed in the comments by trolls, for him being “out of her league” mostly because of her size.
They called her ‘unworthy’ of him and attacked her for having an ‘unhealthy weight’, but many of her followers jumped in her defense in the comment section:
Mellisa in the next post was calling out for people to be more acceptable and less judgmental.
