Learning a foreign language takes patience, dedication, and courage. It’s a seriously tough task, and anyone who has managed to do it deserves respect. Can you imagine then, trying to speak with others in their language, and they decide to mock your accent instead of appreciating your efforts?
Cody is a 24-year-old linguist, author, and musician from California. He speaks several languages himself, so he can empathize with what it takes to learn a foreign language. He decided to share the story about his Russian friend who was mocked for her way of speaking in English.
English is not an easy language for a foreign speaker to master, because it is a ‘mongrel’ language that consists of Germanic, Romance and Celtic influences. There are many exceptions that don’t really make sense (especially for a foreigner that has to remember all of them separately), and the grammar structure is inconsistent.
This obviously bright and capable Russian girl was not about to be belittled by someone that doesn’t have a clue what it means to communicate in a foreign language!
