Scientist Wears “Sparkly” For NASA Talk After Unusual Request From Group Of Girls

Rita J. King is a scientist that “analyzes trends, probability, data from the past and present, and a multitude of other information to postulate potential futures”, or shortly called a futurist. To add to that, she is stylish to the core!

She was recently asked to deliver a speech at a TedxYouth event for NASA in Langley, Virginia, and she showed up in an absolutely stunning, sparkly dress. However, there was a reason behind the dress.

She told BuzzFeed News that a group of girls had written a letter in which they requested that she wears something sparkly for the event, because they wanted to believe that scientists could be sparkly. They wanted to see a “sparkling geek”, so sparkle she did.

She did the gesture in order to break down the stereotypes that the typically “feminine” clothing detracts from a person’s level of seriousness about their career, which is something women have often experienced, especially in male-dominated spaces.
