2020 has been a massive roller coaster so far, and it seems like everything happened this year. In fact, September alone has brought enough trouble, and it all started with a gender reveal party that resulted in a massive fire in California. The party also started off a heated debate about gender reveal parties and how we talk about gender in general, and Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian added fuel to the fire when he wore a face mask with the word ‘Girl Dad’ printed on it to the US Open.

Although many people praised Ohanian for his face mask choice, it popped the question: Why do male celebrities feel that they have to refer to themselves as ‘Girl Dads’ rather than just ‘Dad’?
Ohanian hasn’t commented about his choice of face mask, but some people suggested that it might be a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, who often referred to himself as a ‘Girl Dad’.
The internet was divided about the issue. While some see the value in dads that offer up a distinction, others argued that there’s no need for distinct genders, and it doesn’t matter if a father is a ‘Girl Dad’, a ‘Boy Dad’ or just a ‘Dad’. What’s your opinion on this one?
😷 @WearAtoms had made this as a custom 1 of 1 mask for me, but because all of you kept tweeting + asking about getting some for the #GirlDad in your life, they turned it into a product. Business leaders in the age of social need to adapt, fasthttps://t.co/Uf1gZ6jk9s pic.twitter.com/ywxlBa1e5q

I understand people are emotional right now, but #girldad and #boymom are very problematic labels IMO. Can’t we just be parents? Sure there’s special bonds between all loved ones; why does gender matter? Just love
