Apart from being two of the best British actors in history and national treasures, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart have also been best mates for years! In fact, they cherish their friendship so much that they even got engaged a few days ago.
Believe it or not, though, the two only met at the cast for X-Men.
The 80-year-old Sir Patrick told the Hollywood Reporter that they had adjoining trailers, and on that kind of movies, actors spend more time in their trailers than in front of the camera.
Ian and Patrick hung out together, drank tea and something a bit stronger in the afternoon, and they got to know each other. They found out that they had so much in common, and Ian even married Sir Patrick and his wife.
However, the most iconic moment the duo shared was when Sir Ian ‘proposed’ to his long-time friend on the premiere of Star Trek: Picard at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London last year. Sir Patrick, expectedly, said ‘yes’, and the two shared a big smooch.

Even the global pandemic couldn’t stop their friendship. When Sir Patrick was celebrating his 80th birthday during the UK lockdown, Sir Ian sent him a cute message in which he wished him many happy returns, and recited a sonnet for Sir Patrick. As you probably know already, the sonet was part of Sir Ian McKellen’s awesome #SonnetADay readings he did on Twitter during the lockdown.
Keep it coming boys! We love it!
