Leland Schipper is a high school math teacher, and, like most educators, he teaches other lessons too.
He decided to share the story about a time he wore a rainbow shirt at school, and his students wondered why he did it, because it might make some people think he’s gay. So, he shared a photo of himself wearing the t-shirt featuring a rainbow-filled outline of the state of Iowa – where he teaches.
He also shared an exchange he had with two students, and it’s brilliant:
Schipper perfectly explained why he felt it was very important to show his students that he is not embarrassed if people think he’s gay. However, one of the commenters tried to go all religious on him, saying that “it would be more inspirational if he taught them 1 Timothy 3-11”. It’s a Bible verse that explains why wives should be respected and it’s about exercising self-control and faithfulness.
Leland’s response to that was even better than the post itself, though:
Most of the comments were supportive, though, and many people expressed their gratitude. His post was shared more than 32k times, and many people were touched by the post and wrote what it meant to them personally.
