Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, will not stand behind the law requiring vasectomies, as it is a “blatant violation of a male person’s bodily autonomy”.
Cruz tweeted an article from a conservative news site about Alabama state Rep. Rolanda Hollis’ bill that would require men to undergo vasectomies at the age of 50 or after the birth of their third child as a response to the draconic abortion ban in the state.
He wrote: “Yikes. A government big enough to give you everything is big enough to take everything…literally!”
Cruz has advocated for a full ban on abortion with no exceptions and taking away funding for Planned Parenthood.
Hollis introduced bill HB238 on Thursday, and the bill would require men to undergo vasectomies “at their own expense” once they turn 50 or have a third child, whichever comes first. Hollis wrote in the bill’s synopsis that under existing laws, there are no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men.
Alabama passed the severe anti-abortion law in May, which makes the procedure almost entirely illegal unless the mother’s health is in danger, and with zero exceptions. To add to that, doctors who break this law could face a prison sentence of up to 99 years, and similarly to other red states that have passed heavy abortion restrictions, Alabama conservatives hope the court battles over the law to eventually end up in front of the conservative-leaving Supreme Court.
