State legislators in Austin, Texas, stayed up till early in the morning hearing an emotional testimony about a proposed abortion ban.
The bill, House Bill 896, would effectively criminalize abortion and classify it as taking someone’s life, and, believe it or not, women who have abortions could be sentenced to paying the ultimate price – losing their lives.
State Rep. Victoria Neave, a Democrat from Dallas, questioned how essentially one is okay with subjecting a woman to a penalty for the exact thing that one is alleging that she is doing to a child.
State Rep. Tony Tinderholt, a Republican from Arlington, however, said that it’s important to remember that if a drunk driver takes away the life of a pregnant woman, he gets charged twice, so it’s not specifically criminalizing women – it’s just equalizing the law.
What a pathetic statement, right?
The hearing wrapped up at 3 a.m. in the House Judiciary Committee, and the bill now goes before the full Texas House for debate.
