The South Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech is teaching people not to be afraid of the dark. She is breaking the barriers of conventional beauty with her deeply pigmented skin and fierce determination while encouraging others to do the same.

She now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has no shame about her melanin! She says that her chocolate is elegant, and she represents a nation of warriors. More than 20k people like her every Instagram post, and in one of them, she detailed the experience she had with an Uber driver who suggested that she should ‘bleach’ her skin. She responded with laughter and tells us that she gets many questions and weird looks about her dark skin.

She is a voice for Black rights around the world, and she has even been dubbed as “Queen of the Dark”, the title she happily accepted. She says that you should love the skin you live in and that you shouldn’t let the American beauty standards damage your African soul. Black is bold, black is beautiful, black is gold…
