Have you seen someone with a semicolon tattoo? Well, if not, we believe you will, because they’re popping up everywhere!
The semicolon is a tattoo that has gained popularity lately, and it has a serious meaning behind it.
The semicolon tattoo actually represents mental health struggles and the importance of prevention people from taking their own lives.
The Project Semicolon started out as a social media movement back in 2013, and its participants describe themselves as a “movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to the people who are struggling with depression, addiction, etc. It exists to encourage, love, and inspire.
However, you’re probably asking the question: Why did they choose a semicolon?
“A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”
It was originally created as a day where people were encouraged to draw a semicolon on themselves and take a photo of it, but it quickly grew into a whole, permanent movement. People all over the world are not tattooing semicolons on their bodies, and it serves as a reminder of their struggle, victory, and survival.
Jenn Brown and Jeremy Jaramillo are part of The Semicolon Tattoo Project, and it’s an organization inspired by the semicolon movement. They saw the opportunity to help the community and reduce the stigma around mental illness.
Over 43 million Americans dealth with a mental illness in 2012, and it a very common disease. However, there’s a stigma around it that prevents people from talking about it, and that represents a barrier to getting help.
So, the tattoo serves as a conversation started. People ask what it is, and get told what it is and what’s its purpose.
I mean, if you see someone’s tattoo and you’re interested in it, it’s a good time to start a conversation with them. So, the semicolon tattoo provides a great opportunity to talk and to eventually break the stigma around mental illness.
