Not a single person enters marriage with the thought that one day they’ll divorce, and having children only complicates things even more. It can be pretty difficult to treat your ex with respect and love, even in the best and most amicable situations, but it’s one of the key things to do in order to show your kids that even though your family dynamics have changed, you will always be a family.
A perfect example of why that love and respect is so important was the photo shared by Facebook user Codie LaChelle McPhate. It saw her dad mowing the lawn, but she explained that it was actually her mom’s lawn, and they have been divorced for decades.
According to McPhate, her parents have always had a united front when it comes to their family.
“They’ve never let on that their relationship was bad or good. Its always been ‘We’re a family and that’s all you need to know. To this day, I don’t even know why my parents got divorced. My mom always said, ‘It’s none of your business, it wasn’t your marriage, it was mine.’” – she adds.
The kids don’t need to know why you’re getting divorced, who did what, or whose “fault” it was (or you think it was). What they need to know is that they’re loved, they’re safe, and they will always be a part of a family, even if that family no longer lives together.
McPhate parents’ approach to divorce echoed through social media, and she updated it since it went viral. She added that her dad wants everyone to know that he’s not a saint, it’s just “we should all choose kindness whenever we can.”
