A trans student from Virginia was not allowed to go to the girls’ locker room during an active shooter drill, and she was left to sit by herself in the gym instead, while the adults were discussing where they should put her. The incident inspired many allies within the school’s community to fight back.
A group of students, parents, and allies in Virginia, named Equality Stafford, took the matter to Facebook and shared the middle schooler’s story. Stafford County Middle School recently held a lockdown drill, and it involved students going into locker rooms segregated by their gender. The young girl, however, was not allowed to join the rest of the girls and was left to sit on the bleachers.
Equality Stafford put out an important call to action. They are asking for the concerned community members to turn out for an upcoming school board meeting and demand answers. Naturally, angry commenters quickly poured in.
The school’s spokesperson, Sherie Johnson, released a statement in response to the backlash. It reads:
“The new superintendent has requested a review of all protocols and procedures to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect. The welfare of all students is of the utmost importance for SCPS.”
