Gretchen Custodio is a 28-year-old transgender woman who was about to enter the restroom in Quezon City in Manila, Philippines, when her path was blocked by a female cleaner and was told that she can’t use the bathroom.
Gretchen filmed the incident, and the worker, Chair Ganal, is heard yelling that “Gretchen still has a male genitalia, and she should remember that”.
Gretchen also received an apology letter coming from the cleaner who admitted she had ‘made a mistake’.
She called the police, and when they arrived a few hours later, they handcuffed Gretchen “like a shoplifter” before taking her to the police station.
The mall has since filed a complaint against the shopper, but it has been later dropped.
The police said that Gretchen was moved from one division to another because the officers were confused on how to handle her case, citing that it was the first time it has happened.
The cleaner has since written a letter to Gretchen in which she apologized to her.
The letter reads:
‘I want to apologise to Gretchen. I hope with this apology she will give me a second chance.
‘I am only human. It was not my intention to offend her. I am willing to study the rights of the LGBT. That is all. I am sorry.’
Gretchen has since said that she felt like she was a shoplifter being dragged inside the mall, and she couldn’t understand how could someone treat her like that for what she is.
