Twitter Thread Shows Why Queer People Are Forced To Sacrifice Authenticity As A Defense Mechanism

Alexander Leon is an LGBT+, mental health, and anti-racism activist whose recent Twitter thread about how LGBT people are forced to create defense mechanisms has gone viral.

He addressed the topic of how queer people have to create defense mechanisms in order to protect themselves from being judged by society. According to him, members of the LGBTQ+ community have to “sacrifice authenticity” in order to reduce the prejudice and humiliation, and part of growing up as a queer person is figuring out which parts of you are real, and which ones are just there to serve as armor.

Leon’s thread was retweeted more than 56k times, and almost 200k people liked it. Thousands of people shared that they related to it because they also felt that their true selves couldn’t possibly fit in in society, so they had to come up with new identities in order to protect themselves.
