Marwa Elselehdar is Egypt’s first female ship captain and the person that was falsely accused of being in control of the Ever Given ship – the infamous ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal.
However, at the time of the incident Marwa was working as a first mate on the Aida IV in Alexandria, Egypt, which is hundreds of miles away from the Suez canal. So, the rumors that she was captaining the ship that got stuck shocked her.
The rumors spread on the internet like a wildfire, and people were making memes and claiming that she was to blame for the incident. There were even fake Twitter accounts that used her name to share false stories. Thankfully, Marwa had an interview with the BBC in which she said that she didn’t have any idea of why would someone try to blame her for the incident.
“I felt that I might be targeted maybe because I’m a successful female in this field or because I’m Egyptian, but I’m not sure. People in our society still don’t accept the idea of girls working in the sea away from their families for a long time.
As you probably know already, the Ever Given ship blocked the Suez Canal and hit headline last week after it brought the largest shipping route to a halt for a few days.
However, Marwa doesn’t care about the rumors, and said that when you do what you love, it’s not necessary to seek the approval of everyone.
The ship was eventually removed after a team of experts was working tirelessly for 6 days to free the canal.
