Three high-profile suicides occurred just in a span of one week: Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, and Ines Zorreguieta. Suicide awareness, prevention and mental health issues in the United States have been a highly debated topic on the Internet in the last few months, and the suicide hotlines have been tweeted many, many times in order those who are suffering to reach out.
However, a Twitter user explained that it is not always that simple. The statistics show that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US, and more than half of them were people who were not suffering from mental health issues, but they had an outside problem such as loss of job, relationship or the death of a loved one.
Sheila O’Malley is a Twitter user who shared her battle with depression after her father had died, and she explained how not always people who suffer can reach out. It was her friends that showed up when they noticed she was struggling, and they managed to show her she wasn’t alone through an amazing gesture.
