“Women are bad drivers” is probably one of the most persistent sexist stereotype and a global phenomenon.
A parking lot in southeast China in the Tonglu Service Area has around 370 standard-size (men) spaces and only 8 “women-only” space who are 50% larger and painted in pink, the most generic women`s symbol ever.
These larger parking spaces were created specifically for women, because they are bad drivers who cannot park their vehicles without putting themselves and everyone around them in danger.
“Yes, these are parking spaces ‘customized’ for women. It’s part of measures we’ve introduced to humanize the service area,” Pan Zhuren, the director of the parking lot, told Qianjiang Evening News.
He also added that some of the women don`t know to reverse and often parked their cars recklessly.
This is what we needed, another chance for women to fell offended every time they park their car.
Of course, the news caught the attention and the fury of social media.
“True respect for women entails letting women enjoy the same rights as men,” one user on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter, wore.
Unfortunately, these parking spaces aren’t new: there are many others like them all over Europe in countries like Switzerland and Germany and also in Australia. We must point out that in Germany these spaces were created to protect women from sexual assault.
Well, it`s always a good idea to single out one gender based on an unfounded belief….. NOT!
