“Who Wore It Better, The Fat Or The Skinny?” This Is How The Media Polices Women`s Bodies

During the People En Espanol’s 50 Most Beautiful gala, Daniela Di Giacomo, a Venezuelan TV host, and Orange Is The New Black’ Star Dascha Polanco showed up wearing the same dress. I`m sure a situation like this is a realization of every Fashionista’s biggest fear, but that`s nothing compared to the fact that this incident was turned into a contest of “Who wore it better?” by a Univision host several days later.

Dascha Polanco, just couldn’t believe that the media decided to put a big accent on something as shallow as this! She was caught completely off guard and still is in disbelief that nobody even tried to focus on the real issues that Latino women face in Hollywood.

It’s really tasteless to come across today that a host of @univision @elgordoylaflaca has used poor judgment that have become offensive,” – Dascha Polanco.

To make things even worse, the show was also later recapped with El Gordo y la Flaca or “The Fat and the Skinny.”

As Melissa McCarthy pointed out in Refinery29, this is not the first time women are “matched” against each other. She also added that so far we have never seen a picture of two men standing next to each other with a caption like “Who’s got the better knees?”

At the end it was nice to see how stars like Dascha Polanco, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Poehler and McCarthy came together, united under the banner of the #AskHerMore campaign and battle appearance based topics.

As Polanco pointed out, women face much more important issues and problems on a daily basis than the fabric they are dressed in!
